Compulsive Overeating:
Are You an Addict?

Are you a food addict? Answer the following questions to find out:

1. Are you obsessed with food: planning, preparing, and eating food?    Yes   No

Addicts and alcoholics are typically obsessed with their favorite substance.

2. Do you eat compulsively? Do you binge?    Yes   No

When someone is considered to be a substance abuser or addict, it is because they have demonstrated, repeatedly, that they are not in control of themselves when they use their drug of choice.

When you no longer feel in control of choosing when to start or stop eating, you have become a compulsive overeater!

3. Did you know that “addicts” use drugs, alcohol, and food as tranquilizers?    Yes   No

All dysfunctional behaviors attempt to accomplish or fulfill an emotional need. Compulsive overeating and subsequent weight gain serve this purpose.

4. Are you using food as your drug of choice?    Yes   No

Many people experience compulsive overeating due to: emotional issues, poor diet and stress which are all interlinked. Addicts and alcoholics are typically obsessed with their favorite substance.  Someone is considered a substance abuser or addict when they have repeatedly demonstrated that they are not in control when they are using their drug of choice. Given the above definitions, an overweight person can be treated as if they have a substance abuse problem: they can be treated for chemical dependency
